The design process for SGU Regional Airport’s branding began with an in-depth exploration of Southern Utah’s cultural and geographical wonders. It has a ton of surrounding read rock and I new I wanted to incorporate that into my design. 

As I delved into the design, I envisioned a concept that would not only showcase the distinctive landscape but also embody the essence of air travel. My sketches led me to the creation of an abstract mark — a silhouette of Utah, subtly with a dynamic slash symbolizing the ascent of an airplane into the skies. This symbolic representation aimed to evoke the excitement and dynamism inherent in air travel while paying homage to the unique backdrop of Southern Utah.

I carefully selected typography that combined classic elements with a contemporary flair. The typography choice aimed to reflect the airport’s commitment to both its rich heritage and its forward-looking approach to aviation.

I crafted each design element in Adobe Illustrator, where I could refine and perfect the details to ensure a seamless integration of the various components. The final logo encapsulated these elements just the way I wanted them to. Creating a visual identity that resonates with SGU Regional Airport’s values and the spirit of Southern Utah.

Colors

These color palette creates a feeling that is cohesive, organic, and authentic. #1d1d26 and #353741 adds a sense of sophistication and can be effective in creating a visually grounded and stable foundation. #b24a1a and #db8047 conveys warmth and earthiness which can be found in the red rocks of Saint George, UT. #f0efec helps balance the warmer tones and prevents the overall design from feeling too heavy. 

Typography

I wanted to convey a harmonious blend of modernity and warmth for the regional airport in Southern Utah. Use Korolev Heavy Italic in Copper Horizon for headers, Korolev Medium in Canyon Clay for sub- headers, Utopia Std in Midnight Slate for body copy and for any small snippets of text. The use of san serifs as the main text with the serif for the body copy helps maintain a clean and contemporary visual aesthetic.
